Ours (Singapore) is material culture. We buy sportmen, buy copy right, buy patent, by international talent, by resources, buy other country's property, buy mini-bond, buy into other peoples's RISK AND FALL!

Today (28 Sep 2008) is the birth day of Confucius, the teacher of Chinese. It was the birth of Humanity ( 仁 ren) in BC 551. "Ren仁" means 2 or more persons take care each other.

Person (人ren) is a key element of being (存在). The other 2 elements are earth (地di) and space (天tia) . 3 in 1 is the concept of being . This is uniqe Chinese philosophy thought.

The word "Chinese中华" is an all-in-one cultural concept. It includes Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism, Islam, Christian, Marxism, Communism and overseas Chinese. The highest value is Humanity (仁Ren).

Confucius said: "Ren zhe ai Ren仁者爱人" meaning "be humanity and love persons". With this in mind, there will be social harmony(和he). Conflict is limited.

Harmony (和he) was a philosophy thought promoted in Japan before 1859. Humanity is specified in the Human Right Act, United Nation. PRC promotes "Harmony Society" since early-2007 officially.

The following recent events would not happend if Confucian Ethic is practised:

- school building collapsed in Sichuan Province

- tainted milk

- dubious financial product

- corruption of professional & politician.

After Enron & Worldcom scams in early-2000, US establish new law like sabanes-oxley.

Now, it seems Financial Adviser Act can not refrain salesperson from misrepresentation.

Are we going to have more rule and regulation? The list of questions and answers from diverse interest group is going on and on.

Unlike Business Ethic, the ancient China Emperor applied Confucian Ethic to rule Chinese society over 2000 years until 19 century when governor of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) themself corruption! The tradition Chinese value collapsed and replaced by communism (a western value). Main land Chinese starve without one permanent ruler - CONFUCIAN ETHIC.

What is that one permanent ruler (or Meta-Ethic) beyong governing law in Singapore?

Avoid incurring a large debt

Hi Sir,

I'm a student currently studying in college. I am keen on going overseas to the UK to read law after my A levels but I have qualms about the cost. I understand that the fees would cost about S$100 000. But with the cost of living considered, the amount would probably triple to S$300 000. I was hoping you could shed some light on bank loans or other possible avenues that would allow me to realize this ambition. Hope to hear from you soon.

REPLY By Tan Kin Lian - I usually advise people not to incur big debts, even for education. I did not go to university and can still do well in my career. If not, I am happy to have a more modest career.

I agree with Professor Tan Kin Lin. Creative Technology Founder Mr Sim Wong Hock is another good example. Both were not U graduate. The 1st Foreign Minister was a U dropout in London. Microsoft Founder Mr Bill Gate was a Harvard U dropout. 行行出壯元 Excellency in all profession.

One million U graduates in PRC each year. Many graduate from Top U in China can not find a job. They join our employment market. Many Philipine graduates work in Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam as English Teacher. Some are working in Singapore as a domestic maid !

Why don't study in Singapore and not indebted?

Importantly, a Polytechnic Diploma/Local U Degree are RECOGNISED and easly get a job and earn $36k per annum instead of indebted with no guarantee future. You may study and work here 2 years and migrate to check if other country of moon is larger!

Life is more than a piece of paper and $$$.

You thought they don’t have money to buy milk. They never copy everything from the west. That is why Thai Beer is published listed in Singapore. No casino is allowed in Phuket. Thais has very strong traditional value. Their strength.

Note. Early-1980's, I met Master Hua 宣化(渡轮)at Singapore Buddhist Lodge and learned Zen from his appointed instructor (a Chinese Professor). In 1997 (39 years old) , I had a dream. Master Hua told me I will die at 55 years old. Next day, I read a chapter of his book. He explains why life is short and precious. On 17 July 1997, I fly from Singapore to San Francisco . My first impression was begger in downtown. They asked money only from Asian (NOT American white)! These begger is a sign of social-economic issue. The financial atomic bomb finally exploded on 15 Sep 2008 (http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/news/0809/gallery.week_that_broke_wall_street/index.html ). Poor American and the world become poorer in the next 5 years. I got above mentioned "Ten Steps" right in front of my bed in The City of Ten Thousand Buddha美国万佛城, Talmage, California (http://www.drbu.org/ ). I brought it back to Singapore and circulate it to Buddhist friend inclusive my sister. She passed away at 40 years old ( July 2003) ! The city is a place of refuge for Vietnamese, Taiwanese and Malaysian Buddhist. Before Master Hua buy over the city, it was a mental hospital closed after many years of dry season. Having bought it, Master Hua found underground water with his "third eye" and survive the city with Buddhit Monastery lifestyle - one meal a day for monk/nun.

I disagree Taiwan (Note 1) is a gracious society at macro level where you can view the rudeness/fighting during senate debate or paliament meeting. Corruption and seperatism in Taiwan are never gracious ! Please watch Cable TV Channel 49.

Perhaps you might want to read my post more careful. My friend never expected any 5 star treatment. He only expected EQUAL treatment, which I don't think is too much. When rot comes from the top, it doesn't make sense to stay and fight. Sometimes, life is about cutting losses and moving on.I think many Singaporeans tend to generalize scholars. Not all scholars are high flyers. Of course, most Singaporeans are only exposed to those President's scholars, SAF scholars, PSC scholars..etc etc.. But there are other scholars as well, which were not treated as well as these. These are the ones which I'm writing about. What most Singaporeans think is, if people give you money to study, then you should be happy about it, so even if they treat you like crap, don't complain. Fantastic attitude. So they better not complain about increases in living expenses, bus fares, MRT fares, food cost... etc. You voted for the government and they gave you NSS and ERS, so shut up.

Yes, I acknowledged your feeling as a scholar.

Our society has sky high expectation of a scholar. You can not change them. It is stressful!

You can change your self by droping the title subjectively (in your mind). Visualize your future now. Meditation do help you to become a happy person. Be happy when you wake-up in the morning. If you can't "ha ha ha", learn yoga from Theresa Hsu (109 years old), http://www.hearttoheartservice.org/

On issue of "EQUAL" (Note 1), it is impossible in this grobe. Tai Zi Tang 太子党 is common in PRC. USA is no exception (Senior Bush & Junior Bush)! Again, better let go this idealism if you want to be happy and most importantly be HEALTHY.

Note. In December 2005, I met a PRC MOE officer at Tsing Hua University清华大学 . She responsible for application of Singapore Scholarship. Each year she help 300 students who heading to Singpaore . I was shocked with this figure!
In July 2007, I went back to Tsing Hua University again. My driver told me how good about Singapore. He admire the discipline and corruption free in Singapore. The driver, a staff of THU, never been to Singapore! A THU professor had told him about goodness of Singapore. The China professor was formally a Singapore Scholar. Can you see the positive impact of scholarship?

Note. The research work done by both Ven. Ying Shun & Yan Pei are selected few recognised by Japanese scholar. The research finding of Yin Shun is highly commended by PKU 北大professors. Ven Tai Xu 太虚(1890-1947) was their teacher. He is selected as a philosopher by the a China academy. My teacher Prof. Lou Yu Lie楼宇列has author a book for this purpose.

太虚評传 is available in National Library. One may be supprised that all of above mentioned scholar monks were not University graduate !

Late Mr Lin Yi Feng 林义丰

Mr Lin Yi Feng (1st right back row) and author (2nd right back row).

Mr Lin (deceased on 26 Sep 1997), Founder of Kwan-In Welfare Society 观音救苦会 and Editor of The Sound of Mercy慈声季刊. The society provides free TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for the needy regardless of religion and race at 3 permanent clinics. Their mobile clinics visit 13 designated location at the patient's doorstep regularly.

A total amount of S$187163.12 were donated to 100558 patients in 2007 (Note 1).

It's supporter are mainly Buddhist and Daoist. Without traditional Chinese value upheld by the Chinese community in Singapore, this Society would be impossible !

I asked Mr Lin why he start the Society: "I learned TCM from my Shi Fu (师傅teacher) at free of charge. He was the Abbott of Shuang Lin Monastery 双林寺and a Shao Lin少林 martial art master. Now, I do the same charitable work as my Shi Fu did , " he reply with mercy like Kwan-in Bodhisattva !

The founding of society was not welcomed by the Singapore Buddhist Federation with regret. Mr Lin had a very hard time to strive for his mission! He passed away at 60 years old after liver cancer.

He must be overworked !

Medicine in hospital are clinical tested and approved by the Drug Admin. The process from research to end user may take decade! Manufacturer has to recall back medical product as and when necessarry. Likewise for aircraft spare parts. It must be airworthy.

New financial product has no warranty. There is not enough regulation. They are alternative medicine. Take your own risk if side effect or no healing effect.

We can now safely say prestige bank was selling "alternative medicine" .

Where is American civilization along the Wall Street?

Why American government (the superpower in the world) has no housing program for the poor?

Late Miss Shi Lan Pin史兰萍

Late Lan Pin, a primary school teacher, passed away at 50+ after breast cancer. She was the founder of Evergreen Cultural Service 长青文化社and Vegetarian Restaurant素食林 at Pearl Center珠光大夏.

Rev. Guang Sheng广声, now the Abbott of Bright Hill Monastery光明山 & Chairman of Singapore Buddhist Federation, was her Restaurant Manager.

I was lucky to associate with so many good friends around 1980's.

Our plateform was the Youth Section 青年部of Singapore Buddhist Lodge新加坡佛教居士林. Students from Nan Yang University 南洋大学attended Buddhism seminar here. They are Rev. Guang Pin广品 (now General Secretary of Singapore Buddhist Federation新加坡佛教总会) , Rev. Guan Chao广超 (Founder of For You Information佛友 http://www.4ui.com/ ) , Rev. Yuan Qin远清 (Religious Adviser of The Buddhist Library), Miss Li Zhi丽芝 (Manager of Evergreen) to name a few.

Unfortunately, the Youth Section and a Library were shut down on supicious of

a "COMMUNISM "(Note 1) book found! Was it true?

Youth Director Chang Miao嫦妙 resigned before the doors shut!

" Secretary-General Lee Bock Guan 李木源司理 visited my house and want me to sign an official notice cater for shut down of Youth Section , " Miss Chang Miao told me at Golden Pagoda (Tampinese Road), "I never agree with him , I never liable for such sin".

Today, I am shocked by SBL invited a renown COMMUNIST monk as their Religion Adviser !!

(Communist monk is a career monk who work in China & Vietnam temples.)

Late Lan Pin was also the Editor of "智慧" Wisdom Buddhist magazine (available in National Library Reference Section). She and her sister Shi Lan Xiang 史兰香always invited me to contribute articles. Late Lan Xiang was a Sergeant in MINDEF. She passed away lately !

My published articles were consolidated into one book titled "佛法无边"(Infinite Dhamma) under author name 慧茂Hui Mao. It is available in the National Library (ISBN 981-00-5337-1). It was my first published book for leisure reading only. The sponsor was Flexitec Electronic Enterprise.

Last few weeks, Thailand university students stop to attend class , stop to take examination and join mob gangs (NOT legal political party) to occupied 4 international airports.

Airport operation, tourism, essential supply like medicine and aircraft emergency landing (if any) were disrupted. THIS PARTICULAR PROTEST IS ANTI-HUMANISTIC.

The University student nerver understand their consequences of such action. Why?

My sister had breast surgery and cancer cell spread deep to her spine and bone and passed away on 10 July 2003.

Being an elder brother, I escort her to all medical appointments. I deeply understand "Suffering" ( dukha) , the first truth of 4 Noble Truths in Buddhism. She was a devoted Buddhist. Her last moment spent at a Catholic Hospice (Jurong) where Catholic nun
really show their God of love. I learnt LOVE is not a religion. Unfortunately, man label it and become HATE. Political struggle and war simply derive from hate. Why politician and militant burn and waste their life?!

When she was in National University Hospital, a Buddhist volunteer visited her bed every early morning. One day I was so down and this stranger suddenly telephoned me. I thought she must be a Bodhisattva! My sister had make good cause during her life.

I also met many strangers in many form such as old lady, young girl etc who give early signal of her next step ! In my life, I noticed too many superstition and just don't believe lightly.

Singapore National Pledge

"We, the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people, regardless of race, language and religion, to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality, so as to achieve peace and progress for our nation." It is recited by school student before class daily.

The author was Mr Rajaratnam. He serveed as the 1st Foreign Minister of Singapore .
You might be supprised he was a University drop out !

Other renowned University drop out is Mr Bill Gate, Founder of Microsoft Corporation, Founder of Melinda & Bill Gate Foundation (US$40 billion).

Mr Sim Wong Hock, Founder of Creative Technology, was not a University graduate.

Many of my Professors in Peking University北京大学, Top 5 University in China, do not have a Master or PhD title!

Recently, a well known monk with PhD title was charged to the Court by the authority !

Will eliteism work? Part of elite in Thailand believe it and see Buddhist farmers as ignorant!
What is the outcome of such social divide in future? Conflict definitely !

Dr Chiew (lady in picture), Philosophy Professor of PSU, told me recently at IBC Convocation: "I don't believe in degree, the academy highlight prestige title to protect themself ! Academy must open. If not, something wrong with the educaion."

In 2002, Dr Tan (Palliative Care Specialist ) was a postgraduate student of Kelaniya University Buddhism Program. He presented his thesis in accordance with his medical school research standard . I read it with great appreciation. The thesis supervisor Dr Santina rejected it. He want student to consult my thesis which I follow Dr Santina's standard strictly. Dr Tan later disappear from the Buddhism class with regret!

Why Confucianism, Daoism, Buddhism and other literatures are studied as university text when these paper/book are not comparable PhD thesis?

Question 2 : Idealism?

"One United People” = Shared Value
Comment: The focus is “people” - Humanism, originated from the Renaissance Cultural Movement (the western value).This shared value is an answer to Q1 & Q2 if able to upheld.

Under Chinese philosophy thought ,

“one united people” = “one for all, all for one 你中有我, 我中有你.” (Note 2)

"Peace & Progress” = Mission
Comment: Both hard power and soft power are required for these outcomes. The effort we put is very tough given a small red dot - Singapore island (Note 3) !

“Democratic Society” = Strategy
Comment: This is a political mean.
Question 3: Which democracty theory?

“Justice” = Value
Comment: An answer of Q1 & Q3 may result the outcome of Justice

Overall Comment:
1. The is a balance context. Thanks to the draftman Mr Rajaratnan.
2. What is agreeable and what is disagreeable of the above mentioned will determine the direction of this tiny dot (Singapore).
3. Any one who has negative thought of national interest should first consult the national pledge. The leader should always convince his people with reference to the national pledge.

Note 1: I am NOT a member of any political alliance. I did this analysis in 2004 when my classmate Dr Xie Ya Hong 解亚红at Beijing University北大 ask me what is politcal thought of Singapore.

Two superpower namely Soviet Union (communism) and USA (capitalism) were behind the Vietnam War. Both superpower proclaimed freedom of Asia.

Communism movement was the gun aiming at South East Asia with Thailand Kingdom in the front line. Both superpower plus China Communist were behind military coups in South East Asia with exception of Malaysia & Singapore.

Communism movement remained a gun pointing at our head. Singapore choose to self-defence with support from capitalist nations. Nan Yang University(南洋大学), pro-communism student/businessmen inclusive Creative Technology Founder Mr Sim Wong Hock were the political causaulties under international anti-communism movement ! Those were the history already over !

History has mode the leadership style - a pillar of today's Singapore. Free thinker wants a change of it.

Local born Taiwanese (ROC) had wanted a change of her political leadership. They hate dictatator General Chiang and his comrade. It was a police state!
They did it sucessfully with a new government who do one more step - independent.

Before President Chen Shui-bian seek second term presidentship, he visited Buddhist scholar Ven. Yin Shun( 印顺法師 )personally in his monastery.

Ven Yin Shun, born in main-land China, was a political causaulty under Taiwan dictatorship. The problem was the dictator's "political interpretation" of a few worlds (less than 10 Chinese characters) in his Buddhism book "佛法慨论"(Introduction to Buddhism) which is absolutely a Buddhism context. He end his Buddhism teaching career at 50+ years old !

President Chen seeked the monk's (90+ years old) advise. Ven Yin Shun who do not hate any politician said: " no way to cut the (Chinese) history ! " Today, the monk's wisdom is proven in Taiwan.

Beside discussion of REASON ("what ought") and "what is", other perspectives like history, international relationship and culture have to study in-depth for an issue.

Before the regulator can do anything to prevent scam , we better help ourself first by NOT CRAVING. Deposit you money in ” iSAVvy Saving Account” at 1.18% p.a. or any other internet bank . We hope MAS (Note 1)will allow citizen to buy government bond directly through internet like USA Treasury.

Ex-British PM Tony Blair visit China many times. I think he appreciates the accomodation of new China communist leadership who do not hate the invasion of China by 20000 troop
from 8 allied countries (British inclusive) in 1990. China's military defeat by Great Britain in the Opium War (1839-1842).

Accomodation (see symbol on top right picture有容乃大) and “1:2 System” (一多相容 Note 1) were ancient Chinese philosohy thought.
Confucius (BC 551-479) said:” 君子和而不同A leader would accept differences and maintain harmony.”

The “1:2″ system maintains harmony like HK since 1997. This is proven today.

What if a leader would NOT accept differences, an ancient China scholar 西周史伯 had warned in BC771: “同则不续Monism never survive ” Soviet Union collapsed !

Mr TKL suggestion of ‘1:2″ system would be best relate it to Chinese civilization.

“1 country 2 system” rooted before the day Dr Sun Yat-Sen(孙中山 1866-1925) passed away. Both communist and republican’s mission are the same - one China only. Deng Xiao Ping was the heir. His strategy was “1:2 system” for 100 years from 1997. It was a chapter of shameful and sad Chinese history! I never want to see such history repeat again.
